Its a pain being a guy
2004-Dec-28, Tuesday 22:53Today was interesting.
I woke up around midnite in pain.
I thought Id slept wrong so I readjusted myself and dropped off for another hr.
This time the pain was much worse.
It felt like Id been kicked in the groin.
Repeatedly.
I got up, moved around, tried everything I could think of.
Somewhere I managed to get another 30 mins of sleep on all fours.
I spent alot of time curled up on the kitchen floor.
Around 6:30 am I finally puked.
I felt better.
I got a little more sleep maybe another 45 mins, curled up with a blanket by
the heating grate.
I didnt want to wake people up. Im already in enough trouble,
dont need to wake people up and piss them off more.
Finally around 8am it was decided that I needed to visit the Dr.
I was afraid I was going to run up a bill only to find it to be the flu.
The pain came in waves and when I hit the next lull we headed into Berkeley.
I was also feeling extreme chills.
I was dropped off in front of the Dr while Dad went to park.
I took a rest halfway down the hall to the waiting room.
Finally I reached the waiting room and collapsed.
Dad got there and talked to the staff and they suggested that I go directly to the ER.
When I collapsed, nobody in the office seemed to be bothered to get up and investigate.
I think this is a clue to replace my Dr soon.
At ER I was dropped off and they wanted me to sign in.
I tried to edxplain tht I couldnt read the form let alone fill it out
Finally I dictated through grated teeth the info to a security guard.
They had me sit on a couch before triage.
The lady on the couch seemed uneasy having me there.
I was a real mess. I prolly scared hell outta her.
They called me for triage and did the usual check.
They had me rate the pain, I gave it a 7.
Then I started to feel worse and told them change it to a 8.5.
They decided I was passing a stone.
They got me on a gurney, took 6 tries to start an IV.
They put several warmed sheets on me but they kept using doublefolded sheets
on me that only covered part of me, and what I really wanted was 1 that
covered all of me not one that kept sliding off the side of me.
I couldnt articulate it to them and was too out
of it to unfold them and get multiple layers, hence i was still freezing cold.
They needed a urine sample but I was too dehydrated to give one.
I had a cup of water after I puked at 6:30 but that was it.
Tried several times.
I was so messed up they were trying to preserve my modesty and I just didnt
care. I just hauled it out and went for it.
They didnt fool around, they put me on morphine.
I dozed off and when I came to again, Dad had eventually gotten badged and
found me.
The CAT scanner was down.
They finally got me in for ultrasound around noon.
The ultrasound tech got me to provide a urine sample.
I got back to ER and they bugged me again for a sample.
I told them that I just gave 1 to ultrasound.
They were bummed when they found out it had been discarded.
Apparently ultrasound wanted to see if it was painful for me to pee not
knowing that one was wanted for lab analysis..
I dozed.
They finally told me they had ruled out kidney stones and everything else.
It was decided that I need another ultrasound this time at the testicles since
this is where I 1st had pain. By now it was close to 3PM.
The guy I got this time was bummed that I came in just as he was expecting to
go home. He also seemed uncomfortable ultra sounding me down there.
I was so out of it I really didnt care.
Well people have been saying Im an overgrown teenager.
Its seems I had a testicular torsion.
This uaually hits boys 12 to 19. It hits 1 out of 4000 14 year olds.
Its virtually unheard of after 25.
Quite literally, my balls were tied in a knot!
Not good, if circulkatioon is lost for too long I couls lose 1 or both.
Im not wild about being a soprano (Im close to baritone normally)
Finally around 1600 (4pm) they scrambled a pediatric urologist and scheduled
the OR for me. Dad recognized the name of the DR from the practice hed been to before.
He said the other Drs kid Dr Lee about having gone into pediatric urology because his fingers were so small.
They still wanted that damned urine sample. Suddenly I felt i could provide it.
Thats when i realize the only times I was able to provide it was right after an ultrasound. Wierd!
I was warned that they like to fix these things within 4 hrs of onset of pain
and being that it was now past 16 hrs, they didnt know how much damage had been done by lack of blood flow. I might come out of surgery missing a testicle.
They wouldnt know till I was opened.
I commented that I was kinda tender and wasnt looking forward to being shaved there. They promised to wait till I was out to do the shaving.
I woke up to a nurse who seemed upset that I wasnt breathing deeper.
I was reassured to learn that I still had both testicles.
They told me to wear briefs and not boxers.
Im not a boxer guy any way so no prob.
Since I had come in sweatpants & sweat shirt, I woke up in a gauze stuffed jockstrap.
Got home, had a bowl of soup and crashed.
In a month or so, Im supposed to go back and make sure both are still healthy, since sometimes
trouble happens later.
