Bye bye July
2013-Aug-01, Thursday 10:03I woke up to a SEV1 incident at work this morning.
Things were winding down as I arrived in the office.
The on-call when it happened was on the ops team in India and it was his 1st SEV1.
A bit more excitement than any of us needed at this hour.
I thought Ravan & DataWolf were already married.
Figmos genealogy sounds like some of the fun Ive been doing.
We actually have a family association that was helpful.
I know my lineage back to 1638 On Dads side.
Having a niece who is an anthropologist, we are filling in the missing pieces
of some of the other branches on Dads side and on Moms side.
On Moms side, its the shortest path to Scotland Ive joined Clan Hay.
Ive also found the clan & castle for "Hilary Poet" (if shes on LJ)
Its turning into a busy summer.
Ive got Marin Double Century cycling event this weekend where Ill be doing communications.
In 2 weeks is the Holstein Hundred, more comms work.
Next week Nor Cal ATOS will be meeting at a home where hes got the old Bella Roma Pizza organ installed.
Dad & Jan are back from the ATOS national convention.
Coming up is the Scottish Games in Pleasanton where Ill be working for Lodema Pottery and marching with Clan Hay.
Meanwhile, the bees...
"Honey, we have a problem...."
We have 2 deep supers on the bottom and 1 medium on top for each hive.
The deeps are packed with honey and the brood count is low.
This could become a problem.
The mediums on top are empty. WTF ?
We pulled the queen excluders to see if we could encourage them to start building comb and honey up there.
An excluder is a grid that lets workers pass but prevents the queen from laying brood where you want honey because she is half again bigger.
Normally we dont rob from the lower supers which are mixed brood honey & pollen.
Normally we only rob from above the excluder.
Lodema thinks they dont like the medium frames, but I recall that some hives dont like the excluder.
In hindsight, we dont really need the excluder until a month and a half before the harvest.
She thinks we need to replace the medium with another deep.
Im hoping that with the excluders gone, they will get busy building comb & honey and free up space for more worker brood at the bottom.
I looked at the fog and decided to skip Dore Alley Faire.
Im starting to ramp up for Dickens Faire.
Meanwhile stealth project is progressing. I need to find time to do legal paperwork.
National Night Out is next Tuesday and Im doing a radio communications presentation for about 6 block parties.
And its looking like BART is going back out on strike. Ill have to get off work by 3pm.
