The SUN E-4500 was bought from a broker.
We removed the ENRON asset tags from it.
Maybe it will help laid off ENRON folks get re employed.
(heheheh)

I ended up re installing it.
While the broker put a fresh install on it, we needed it set up
differently.

The RAID shelves still wont talk to us.

SUN sells console cables but only to certified SUN field engineers.

Now supposedly these things are able to boot off the net.
I set up one of the development servers as a tftpboot host but the
RAIDs still wont answer.

Well, careerwise, Im no longer thumb twiddling.
Im actually doing something challenging.
Right now Im pretty much working 11am to 9pm.

Dashed out mid day to take my skills test with the co-lo facility.
This might get me full time work after this gig ends.

Interesting building. Built like a bunker. Security guard found
me before I was even out of the car. Didnt have to call to be let in.

No windows, 10ft wide halls totally empty except overhead pipes, cable
tray & conduits. 14ft ceilings. It was like being in NORAD.

Task 1 install BSD. The machine was really screwed. Refused to boot from the CD.
Tried another CD still nothing. They had me boot off net.
PXE boot failed. They messed with the net & boot server.
Finally got a net boot and was able to start the install.
Got it installed but when i rebooted I got some other image.
WTF?
Tried again, this time going with a nonstandard partitioning table
hoping to force whatever it had on the drive to get blown away.
That worked. Still had several software packages to install and build a
new kernel.

The make ran OK but I couldnt find the resulting kernel.
Tried several times. I was now out of time and having not even gotten
to the software install, Im basically screwed. Totally blew the test.
ARTGHGHGH!
Of course I lost almost half my allotted 2 hrs with their screwed
up machine to start with.
Not really fair but Im stuck.

Back at the worksite, I mirrored the internal drives and rebooted only
to lose the machine irretrievably. This made 2 failed installs in 1 day!
Double ARGHGHGH!

Just before leaving, I set up another tftpboot server, this time on the 4500
sitting on a portable hub. Ran snoop on the private net. Now the RAIDS booted.

OK SOMEthing went right.
