I had a good time tonight at the NIMBY firedance.
(NIMBY community at tribe.net)

We were again outside under the bridge crane.
We had to set up light blockers because the floodlights were
on and we have no way to turn them off. These are long pvc
poles that hold up a fabric shade that dims the light some but
still lets us see.

While I dont dance yet, Im enough of a fixture that I get
involved in helping set up and take down. I now help with
safety which includes yelling when someone sets themselves on
fire and putting them out if they cant do it themselves.
This is most common with the folks who use white gas rather
than kerosene.

Jared who comes all the way down from Santa Rosa was there
as usual. Hes cute but hopelessly straight. I love watching
him dance. Some dance robotically but Jared really moves.
Hed be fun to watch dance even without fire.

One dance he managed to set himself on fire 6 times during 1
song, but each time it went out before I cold move forward.
White gas is like that.

You can do incredibly crazy & fun things as long as you have
a safety program in place. Im prouid to be part of the safety
program.

The flaming jumprope came out again. Apparently its Jared's.
This time it behaved.

Imagine someone jumping rope with the rope burning (soaked in white gas)
Now Imagine some jumping rope but doing it like irish step dancing.
Now imagine Jared doing his "Riverdance" thing, jumping rope and the
rope is burning.

The main organizers of the sunday night fire dance are a group
that shares a cargo box inside that they use as a workshop.
I only know Matt & Ian by name. They were out with propane
powered flame throwers firing fireballs into the sky.
I really MUST build one!

The Dance Dance Imolation project is coming along. They will
test it on a few future Sunday nights before it makes its way
to Burning Man. They have figured out how to make a playstation
system generate a signal when it boos the dancer who is doing poorly.
That signal will be used to control the automated flamethrowers.

Theres nothing like watching fire dancers dancing to trance music
like "Lemon Jelly" and hearing the BOOM as another fireball
shoots up into the sky.

Part way into the evening the guys from THERM sent one of their
little remote control fire shooting robots out in between the
dancers. This one looks like a little bug only its nearly 4ft
high and has no tentacles, but it has a blow hole in the midddle
of its back that fires puffs of fire on demand.

Sadly, it suddenly stopped. Under its sheet metal skin are its
4 driving wheels and one of them broke. It sat out in the yard
a half hour and one of its handlers reappeared with the freshly
welded wheel and we cheered as it took off again.

Just before midnight, the sky opened up and it began pouring.
We had to scramble fast, we had soundsystem & its laptop,
flamethrowers, personal effects, power cords, light blockers
and lots more to grab and drag inside.

I got home and realized my black camo pants need mending.
The panel that reinforces the seat and crotch is coming loose. ARGH!
