Its been an insane week. Not that Im complaining mind you...
Now that I got a short term job, everyone and his uncle Frank
are coming outta the woodwork wanting me to interview NOW !
Ive been complaining that my lack of UNIX volume management
skills were hurting me. In the last month Ive gotten REAL
experienced at Solaris vol mgmt. Im getting experience at
a lot of things that Im either rusty on or never had. This
will make me much more marketable than I have been in a while.
Tom, my lead has been great about telling me what was next so
I could cram all night so as to be ready to do whatever it is
the next day. Im getting back on the proverbial bike again.
Its been hectic with people coming outta the woodwork demanding
my latest resume and wanting me to phone screen with them.
I did make it late down to Starport this week.
Its been hard to get out of the house before noon.
Some guys in NJ talked to me a while back. Now suddenly they
want me to interview Wednesday at noon. I asked for a sooner so
I could be at my current gig before noon. 1 guiy said he could
get them to phone screen me sooner. Then the other guy says no,
but 11 is doable.
I log off the net from mail & job search and wait for the call.
I field junk call after junk call. Other job recruiters call
wanting to chat me as im trying to keep the line free. Nothing
happens. Well maybe hes actually gonna call at noon like earlier
planned. Nothing. At half past noon I head into work. I send
the recruiter a caustic email about risking losing a gig I have
waiting around the house for a call about a gig I dont have yet.
Last night I get an email saying they called at 11am and got busy
tried again later and no answer. They rescheduled me for 9am
Thursday morning (The time they told me before they could NOT do).
Thursday I got the call and it went OK. A guy from Eagan MN called
me. Apparently I was the last interviewed because they really liked
my resume and were not expecting the other candidates to do as well
as they expected me to do. The good news is I didnt flunk and of the
questions. I had an idea what they were looking for and crammed all
night on the net.
RTFM (Read The F****** Manual) has now been replaged with GFI!

So... I advised my handlers that I seemed to have survived the phone
screen. Last night while I was still at work
(I cant do anything on the phone here, the phone policy is VERY strict)
they called the house and no one was there.
Im dealing with 2 recruiters at the same firm.
Chris is cool, hes a typical laid back New Joisy-ite.
Suchin is kind of a pill.
Hes going on about how strange my phone was, 1st that I
wasnt there and how the phone didnt go to voicemail.
I was working late because hed made me late so many days this
week! -DUH!
My patience was short and I sent him a message sumarizing my
living conditions (sleeping on floor, lost apt, lost pager,
everything I own in storage and how I was NOT in any position
to demand that the owners of the only phone I had access to
make changes to THEIR phone to satisfy HIM!
This gig was in the process of becoming a pain in the ass
and I had enouigh other stuff coming at me, if I lost this one
something else would come up.
I needed to touch base with someone at the jobsite to set up
a breakfast meeting with him for a face to face on Friday
morning. I missed connections. I tried calling this morning
Friday. Couldnt get him. Told my recruiter. He gave me a number
in Eagan MN to call to leave a message for the guy I was supposed
to meet. They guy finally called me back and we set up lunch
today at 2pm.
I got to work. Got pulled into a company meeting. Escaped
just before I was due at lunch. Barely made it in time and
the guy wasnt there. He was 15 min late. I was relieved that
it was HE who was late and not me for a change.
Had a great lunch on EDS (Thank you Mr Perot!). Hit it off with
Jim really well. Lots in common. Lunch went 2 hrs.
Ive got a lot of experience in weird things that they are gonna
need. Among other things, they are building a new data facility.
Im good at build outs.
One of the other things that Im rusty on is Veritas & EMC disk
arrays and Brocade switches. This gig will get me experience
with those things. I might also get some training and possible
a certification.
Ive been praying for it a while. Its happening. Its happening
so fast, its like trying to take a sip from an 8 inch fire hose
at full presure.
Whew !
Still havent gotten much done at work today. Next week is my
last week on this gig. Should end up with enough to last me
till the end of May I hope.
SO now what ?
I seem to have survived 2 rounds. Now it goes to Sr management.
Its a long gig but pays 15/hr less than Im getting right now.
It likely will even out because I wont have the gaps in between.
Oh crap! its 10-99 ! Ok it pays 20 less than Im getting now.
Oh yeah, I have to get a clearance.... fun.....
Im exhausted.
Likely will sleep most of Sat if parents will allow.
I seem to have picked up a cold this week.
